OSRAM Opto Semiconductors CHIPLED® SFH 5701 Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) is a compact, IC-based photodiode with built-in thermal compensation and dark-current suppression. The SFH 5701 is an active component powered by the signal current, and is not reliant on an external power supply. The SFH 5701 therefore has only two pin connections, simplifying system design. The special filter encapsulation of the SFH 5701 lets mainly green light through and filters out infrared wavelengths very efficiently. This ensures that the surface-mountable component is ideally adapted to the spectral sensitivity of the human eye, which also is most sensitive to light in the green range of the color spectrum. Overall, the SFH 5701 detects light in the spectrum between 450nm and 700nm, the visible range for the human eye.
SFH 5701 is an analog component with a linear integrated amplifier which supplies a typical signal of 135µA at 100 lux. The high dynamic range and high sensitivity at low illuminance of 0.01 lux combine to produce reliable light measurements for a wide range of ambient light conditions. The ALS delivers precise measurements even behind dark glass or plastic covers, ideal for passenger cell designs. The compact 1.25mm x 2.0mm x 0.8mm footprint enables use in space contrainted applications, and integrated thermal compensation makes the component insensitive to fluctuations in temperature.
The SFH 5701 is also available in an automotive approved SMT package (SFH 5701 A01) with a product qualification test plan based on the guidelines of AEC-Q101-REV-C, Stress Test Qualification for Automotive Grade Discrete Semiconductors.
